For decades now, “K-E-Z” has abandoned its very successful adult contemporary format at Christmastime to play exclusively holiday music. And every year some people wonder, “Will listeners ever grow tired of wall-to-wall yuletide cheer?” The answer so far has been a resounding “NO!” In the latest Nielsen Audio ratings, not only did 99.9 attract almost three times the audience of runner-up KSLX, it actually grabbed a larger percentage than last year’s winning performance.
With “K-E-Z” taking a much larger portion of the audience, most of the top 10 stations lost listeners as they all competed for a smaller piece of the pie. KUPD and “Live” bucked the trend and actually improved audience share slightly, while KFYI and KOOL suffered the greatest hits (excuse the pun). KMLE (“Camel Country”) slipped out of the top 10.
The Nielsen Audio ratings year is divided into 13 four-week periods, so the 13th “month” is called “Holiday” and covers December 3–30.
