#1 at KZZP/Phoenix: “Father Figure” — written, sung and produced by George Michael. The ex-Whamster’s previous hit, the former #1 “Faith,” holds at #16.
Among other notable songs at “The Number 1 Hit Music Station”:
- Patrick Swayze climbs from #9 to #4 with “She’s Like The Wind,” from the soundtrack of Dirty Dancing, a movie in which he stars;
- INXS falls to #5 with “Need You Tonight,” last week’s #1;
- Elton John inches up to #9 with “Candle In The Wind,” a live version with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra that revamps his popular album track from 1974’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road;
- Michael Jackson has two songs on the survey — “The Way You Make Me Feel” dropping to #10, and “Man In The Mirror” debuting at #27;
- Whitney Houston also scores twice on the Hit List, with “So Emotional” holding at #12 and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” new at #29;
- Pet Shop Boys’ “What Have I Done To Deserve This?” (#13) features ’60s great Dusty Springfield;
- George Harrison’s “Got My Mind Set On You” (#23) was originally recorded in 1962 by soul singer James Ray;
- Tiffany’s “I Saw Him Standing There,” her version of the Beatles’ 1964 hit, climbs to #26. Her prior hit, “Could’ve Been,” falls to #6. Meanwhile, Tif’s teen rival, Debbie Gibson, rises to #28 with “Out Of The Blue.”
- Fleetwood Mac have perhaps their most lightweight popish hit with Christine McVie’s “Everywhere” (#24).
Among the Hitbounds are two songs for the more grown-up listeners of KZZP: Sting’s “Be Still My Beating Heart,” second hit from his second solo album after the Police; and Louis Armstrong’s 1967 recording of “What A Wonderful World” — featured in the new movie Good Morning Vietnam, starring Robin Williams.
