#1 at KRUX/Phoenix: “Shine A Little Love” by the Electric Light Orchestra, leaping from #6 last week. ELO bumps to #2 “Chuck E’s In Love” by former Phoenician Rickie Lee Jones.
Phoenix concert favorite John Stewart jumps from #15 to #8 with “Gold,” featuring Phoenix native Stevie Nicks singing prominent harmony and her Fleetwood Mac bandmate Lindsey Buckingham on guitar. It was his only national hit (not counting “Daydream Believer,” which he wrote and the Monkees took to #1).
Supertramp’s illogical “Logical Song” falls to #9. The Michael McDonald incarnation of the Doobie Brothers hold at #10 with “Minute By Minute.”
Paul McCartney’s group Wings has two hits: the musically masterful “Goodnight Tonight” drops to #34 while its marginally mediocre follow-up, “Getting Closer,” moves up to #32. Donna Summer also has two: “Bad Girls” jumps to #20 as “Hot Stuff” falls to #24.
Elton John’s Philly-soul inspired “Mama Can’t Buy You Love” climbs from #23 to #19. Blondie’s second hit, “One Way Or Another” (“I’m gonna gitcha gitcha gitcha gitcha”) climbs up five to #35.
Among the debuts are two that still get played on classic hits radio stations today: “The Devil Went Down To Georgia” (#36) by the Charlie Daniels Band and “Let’s Go” (#40) by the Cars.
