After 43 years, mainstream rock station KDKB has switched its format to alternative music. The new sound, branded “Alt AZ 93.3,” is being overseen by Trip Reeb, long-time exec at L.A.’s famous KROQ “K-Rock.”
The move was long overdue. KDKB has been a shell of its former self for decades now. From its pioneering status as a progressive rocker in the early ’70s through its evolution into a “superstar” rock format (when it became the most-listened-to station in metro Phoenix), KDKB has been an Arizona mainstay. Despite its glorious heritage, the station hasn’t evolve much with the times and continued trying to compete in what it now essentially a niche format.
Alternative music radio has been tried off and on in the Phoenix market for decades, but this is the first time it has been broadcast on a full-strength FM signal with the capacity to cover the entire metro area. This, finally, will be a true test of the format’s popularity.
