#1 at KRIZ/Phoenix: “Just My Imagination” by the Temptations, edging out Tom Jones’ “She’s A Lady,” which holds at #2 for a third week.
Among the big jumpers this week:
- “Another Day” by Paul McCartney and its flip side, the screamer “Oh Woman, Oh Why” (#23 to #13);
- “Joy To The World” (#42 to #29) by Three Dog Night, which would become the #1 record of the year;
- “Tongue In Cheek” (#49 to #35), Sugarloaf’s follow-up to their #1 KRIZ hit “Green Eyed Lady.”
Kris Kristofferson wrote two hits that climb into the top five this week: “Help Me Make It Through The Night” by Sammi Smith (#3), and “Me And Bobby McGee” (#5) by Janis Joplin.
Other famous cover tunes include the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s “Mr. Bojangles” (#28), written by Phoenix concert favorite Jerry Jeff Walker, and Ike & Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary” (#14), written by John Fogerty and originally a 1969 hit for his group Creedence Clearwater Revival. Meanwhile, Fogerty and Creedence fall to #9 with yet another of their two-sided hits, “Have You Ever Seen The Rain” and “Hey Tonight.”
Other notable songs include:
- “Temptation Eyes” (#6) by the Grass Roots, which would become an inescapable mainstay in oldies radio;
- “What Is Life” (#12), George Harrison’s second hit from his landmark album, All Things Must Pass;
- “Eighteen” (#16), first national hit by Phoenix’s Alice Cooper band;
- “Nature’s Way” (#21), a haunting tune by Spirit.
Among the debuts:
- “One Toke Over The Line” (#40), the swet-sounding pothead anthem by Brewer & Shipley;
- “Indian Reservation” (#47) by the Raiders, which would falter initially, but then return to the KRIZ chart in the summer, hitting #1;
- “I Am … I Said” and its flip side, “Done Too Soon” (#48) by Neil Diamond.
