Note to wife:
The Republicans’ latest attempt to overturn Obamacare failed because three GOP senators, including Arizona’s own John McCain, voted against it. McCain is no fan of Obamacare, but he recognized that this was a lousy bill. More important, he objected to the way it was being bulldozed through the Senate. It was crafted in secret by a few party leaders who didn’t share it with fellow Republicans until very late. There were no committee hearings, no debate, no chance for amendments and, of course, no input from Democrats.
McCain, who is returning to Phoenix to undergo treatment for recently discovered brain cancer, made several impassioned pleas to his colleagues to reject extreme dictates and return to the collegial, deliberative, consensus-building process that has characterized the U.S. Senate since the country’s founding.
