For the umpteenth year in a row “K-E-Z” has ridden its annual all-Christmas music tradition to the top of the metro Phoenix ratings. The station crushed the competition by achieving almost three times the audience share as runner-up KFYI.

As wall-to-wall yuletide tunes sucked up listeners, all the other stations had to compete for a smaller piece of the pie, resulting in seven of the top 10 positions being ties. Even stations that rose in the ranking actually lost audience share. Edging into the top 10 was “The Mountain,” while “Kiss-FM” slipped to #11.

Aside from K-E-Z, the station with the biggest gain in audience share was KOAI (“The Oasis“), whose transmitter in Crown King produces an inconsistent “rimshot” signal in metro Phoenix. Nevertheless, the station skyrocketed from 25th to a 12th place tie. The reason? Perhaps it was the temporary switch from an adult contemporary format to . . . Christmas music.

The ratings year is divided into 13 four-week periods, so Nielsen Audio calls the 13th month “Holiday.” It covers December 4 – 31.
