Thanks to its all-Christmas music programming, “K-E-Z,” as usual, blew away the competition during Nielsen Audio’s “Holiday” ratings period. Nielsen’s ratings year is divided into 13 four-week periods, so the 13th “month” is called “Holiday” and covered December 6 to January 2. “K-E-Z” more than doubled the audience share of runner-up KSLX, but was down from the previous year because . . .
KOOL, which challenged “K-E-Z” with its own wall-to-wall holiday cheer, rebounded from a disastrous previous book to tie at #6. One explanation: When the station abruptly abandoned its usual classic hits format, many regular listeners tuned out. As word got around there was another choice for yuletide music, KOOL gained fans.
Meanwhile, “Kiss FM” and “Live” appeared to have benefited the most from listeners fleeing Santa tunes. Conversely, “The Mountain” took a big hit in audience share but managed to dip only one spot to #4. “Alt AZ” (KDKB) slipped to #11.
