Sep 02 | This week in 1976

#1 at KRIZ/Phoenix: “Baby, I Love Your Way” by Peter Frampton, second hit from the #1 album Frampton Comes Alive.

The #2 album is the classic Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs, with lead-off single “Lowdown” moving up from #14 to #8.

Gary Wright’s “Love Is Alive” holds at #6; it’s the semi-funky follow-up to his ethereal classic “Dream Weaver.” Holding at #16 is Chicago’s biggest hit, “If You Leave Me Now.”

Paul McCartney’s band Wings drops to #20 with the often ridiculed “Let ’Em In” (mundane lyrics – but cool sound) from the #7 album At The Speed Of Sound. His former band, the Beatles, drop to #11 with “Got To Get You Into My Life,” the Revolver album track from 1966 that was finally released as a single to promote the Rock ’n’ Roll Music compilation album. Future George Harrison producer (and Traveling Wilburys bandmate) Jeff Lynne leads the Electric Light Orchestra with “Showdown” (#27), a re-release that was originally a hit in 1973.

This week’s Arizona connections:

  • Phoenix native Stevie Nicks sings harmony on Christine McVie’s “Say You Love Me” (#15), from the self-titled Fleetwood Mac album (#4) – the first LP to feature Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham.
  • Former Paradise Valley resident George Benson is at #18 with his jazzy interpretation of “This Masquerade,” a ballad penned by rollicking piano player Leon Russell.
