Sep 23 | This week in 1971

#1 at KRUX/Phoenix: “Do You Know What I Mean” by Lee Michaels for a second week.

Holding at #2 is former #1 “Maggie May,” the first big solo hit by Rod Stewart. Two other bona fide future classics are on this week’s list: “Won’t Get Fooled Again” (#8) by the Who and John Lennon’s “Imagine” (debuting at #27).

Climbing to #3 is Joan Baez’s version of the Band’s “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.” Falling to #4 are the Carpenters with “Superstar,” written by Leon Russell (with Bonnie Bramlett).

Paul & Linda McCartney’s quirky “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey,”  a former #1, slides down to #22.

Other notables include:

  • the Guess Who’s catchy “Rain Dance” (#9);
  • Bill Withers’ first hit, “Ain’t No Sunshine” (#16);
  • The Story In Your Eyes” (#20), one of the Moody Blues’ most rockin’est;
  • the debut single for Yes, “Your Move” (new at #25) – the first segment of the “I’ve Seen All Good People” album track;
  • If You Really Love Me” by Stevie Wonder (jumping from #21 to #12);
  • Marvin Gaye’s “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)” (#25), the second of three socially conscious hits from his milestone What’s Goin’ On album;
  • Olivia Newton-John’s rendition of “If Not For You” (#29), based on George Harrison’s version of the Bob Dylan song.
