Note to wife:
I know . . . you’re not a sports fan, so you don’t care. But while waiting in line at the store you might hear people talking about the dismal state of Phoenix’s professional teams. Today’s the first full day of autumn – a point in the sports calendar that can be triumphant or, this year, tragic.
The Phoenix Mercury, perennially a powerhouse in women’s basketball, were eliminated in the semifinals of the playoffs earlier this month.
The Arizona Cardinals are just beginning their football season. Three games, three losses.
And perhaps most disheartening of all – the Arizona Diamondbacks. After leading baseball’s National League West division for most of the season, they’ve lost 21 of the past 29 games. Yesterday, they were statistically eliminated from the playoffs.
In hockey, the Phoenix Coyotes finished in last place the past two years and expectations aren’t much better for this season, which starts next week.
Also in October, the hapless Phoenix Suns begin their basketball season. This team was so bad last season they scored the #1 draft pick. Unless they’re able to turn things around with their new star and new coach, it’s going to another long winter for Phoenix sports fans.
