Note to wife:
The U.S. Senate has three office buildings adjacent to the Capitol building itself. John McCain’s office was in the Richard Russell Senate Office Building during all six of his Senate terms. Before entering politics, McCain was the Navy’s liaison to the Senate and lobbied the Armed Services Committee, which met in the Russell building. Later, as senator, McCain would serve on that committee and eventually became its chairman.
Given McCain’s long history within that building — not to mention his stature in the Senate — a proposal has surfaced to rename the facility after him. The building, built in 1972, is named after Senator Richard Russell, a Democrat from Georgia. He was a giant at the time, but has come under more scrutiny lately for his racist views.
Ironically, the proposal was suggested by Chuck Schumer, the Senate Democratic leader. But given McCain’s “turncoat” reputation among right-wingers, any renaming isn’t likely while the Republicans control the Senate.
